RACINE COUNTY — Last year was dismal for Kevin Groth’s company,Quality Home Exteriors, and many other home remodelers.

It’s not that his Town of Tichigan, home-based company is basedon just one type of job — services include roofing, windows anddoors, siding, gutters and decks.

“There were times in 2009 when we just didn’t have any work todo,” Groth said. Sales fell 30 percent to 40 percent belowaverage.

The first half of this year was about 25 percent better thanlast, said Groth, who currently has five workers.

Early last week, the Milwaukee Home Improvement Council releaseda member survey showing some improvement in the first half of thisyear — although not universal. nearly half of respondents saidsales rebounded somewhat, compared with that half of 2009.

But one-fifth said sales fell. and council President DianeAusavich said the scope of projects is smaller than a few yearsago.

Most of Groth’s business now is maintenance-related. Forexample, instead of having their houses painted, some people arehaving them sided with aluminum.

“People are trying to make their homes maintenance-free,” Grothsaid. “Last year, we had almost nothing like that.”

One thing he’s seeing is more people working. Last year,potential customers would tell Groth to come during the day to givea quote — they were laid off anyway.

“It was staggering,” he said.

Stimulus effect

One work generator has been the stimulus program’s 30 percenttax credit — which runs through Dec. 31 — for work that makes homesmore energy-efficient.

“It’s definitely driving people to make purchases,” Grothsaid.

Dennis Hardy, owner of Hardy & Jensen, 6525 Washington Ave.,in Mount Pleasant, said window sales skyrocketed when the programstarted in early 2009.

“Those people who had money … jumped on the program rightaway.” But he said that seems to have stolen potential sales fromthis year.

And in 2010, contractors say, business has been sporadic. 

“It’s so stop-and-start this year,” Hardy said. “There’s noconsistency.”

Jim Wesp, owner of Kettle Moraine Hardwoods, 195 S. 27th St., inRaymond, echoed that. his company supplies hardwoods tocontractors, furniture makers, hobbyists and others.

“We notice that business of ’09 and ’10 is very erratic,” Wespsaid. “We’ll have a couple of weeks of orders that are verystrong.

“And then all of a sudden, it drops off the face of the Earth,and there’s nothing going on at all.”

Commercial work is just as erratic.

Wesp added, “Overall, there’s some recovery, but I can’t say wehave a lot of confidence that it’s going to be permanent.”

High end only

Mike Helding, owner of the Racine Archideck franchise, said decksales this year are double last year’s — but that’s not sayingmuch.

“In 21 years, (2009) was the slowest year ever,” down by morethan half from average.

This year is still below average, and Helding said theconstruction increase has mostly come only with high-end homes.

Gary Kennedy, owner of Kennedy Painting and J&G SeamlessGutters, said almost all of his home-based painting business ishome exteriors, for the maintenance value. Few people aredecorating.

He’s also been hurt by the glut of unemployed people doinghouse-painting.

Kennedy said last year he cut his prices “drastically” — thencut them some more this year. still, business is slow.

To fill the void, Kennedy buys foreclosed homes, rehabs them andrents them out. he explained, “I’m buying houses in order to keepmy crew.”

    I never thought this day would come.

    When Ricky Martin resigned to take the assistant sports editor job at The Murray Ledger and Times two weeks ago, his column came up for grabs.

    for those that know me, I’m kind of opinionated and finally having a place to voice my views on everything sports-related seemed like a gift from heaven. That is until it actually came time to write it.

    I racked my brain all week for ideas and, unfortunately, Saturday I found something to write about. I say unfortunately because I hate the subject of my first column. I write this column with a heavy heart because Saturday morning my best friend died.

  A lot of you probably don’t know Dallas Cassidy, but for those of you who do, I’m sure he impacted you in a very special way. he wasn’t a perfect person but he didn’t need to be – he was Dallas. Whether it was his laugh, the way he lit up a room, his quick comebacks or his mischievous smile, every time you came into contact with him he left a little bit of himself with you. his personality was electric and everything about him was unique in its own way. he was proud of where he came from, fiercely protected those he loved and was  immensely loyal, even to the end. more loyal than anyone I’ve ever known. I’ll miss him so much.

  Sitting in the funeral home Wednesday, I couldn’t believe what was happening. It felt like a terrible dream, watching everything transpire. I’m still numb to the shock of it all and it probably won’t sink in for quite a while. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.

    Dallas was supposed to get old and be my golf buddy. he was supposed to be the crazy uncle my kids loved to be around almost more than me. we should have gone on more trips and cheered on the Kentucky Wildcats this season. we should have done so much more. I’ve had a hard time coping and I don’t know why God did what he did, but I do know that he is still good and his plan is still perfect. That gives me peace.

    As I look back at Dallas’ life, I’m thankful to have been a part of it. Though he only lived a short time, he was part of some of the most memorable moments of my life. he was with me when we skipped football practice the day before Senior Night to go to Newport Aquarium (he was also there when we got to celebrate with a week’s worth of Opportunities for Self-Improvement). he was the one who coached me through my first serious break-up and also the one who encouraged me time and again to make the most of my life. he always told people I was his best friend and I honestly don’t feel worthy. I know he messed up sometimes, but who doesn’t? he was my buddy and a really good one at that. That brings me to Kayden.

  Kayden is Dallas’ little girl. She’s 11 months old and watching her run around the funeral home reminded me so much of him. she has so much energy and was into something constantly (I even think I saw her digging in a flower pot at one point). A couple months before she was born, he asked me if I would be her godfather. At the time, I didn’t think much about it because death wasn’t really on my radar. As I think about it now, though, I feel honored and want to be as much a part of that little girl’s life as I can. She’s the last piece of him left and I want the very best for her.

  Time would fail me to tell you about all the good times I shared with D these past 21 years but I sure wish I could.

    his heart was so big and he wrang every drop out of life. he was more than just my best friend; he was my older brother, and it hurts me more than I could ever express in words telling him goodbye, knowing I’ll never see him or hear his laugh again.

    I’m so grateful God let me know him for as long as he did and I hope I had half the impact on his life as he did mine. The world lost a good one Saturday morning.
